Please let me know through email or a comment if you know of any other great AJAX tutorials and I'll be glad to post them. Also special thanks to all of the folks who produced all of these great free learning experiences.AJAX and API Tutorials Go forth and APIApplication Program Interfaces are, broadly speaking, tools for building software applications. An operating system API might help you build applications with a consistent interface, but Web APIs are mostly about giving you access to data. Even Web APIs aren't a new idea. Google's search API has been available via SOAP since 2002, and there's definitely older services than that. However, the recent growth in Web API availability has...

Since the coining of the the term AJAX over a year ago hundreds if not thousands of websites, blogs and forums have been buzzing with posts on the subject. As I've found this can sometimes leave search engines bewildered as to where the current and relevant information really exists. So I thought I would put together this list of what I think are some of the most relevant AJAX sites are worldwide. Please consider this list of AJAX reference sites to be in its infancy. I don't read as many languages as I'd like to so the current list is rather limited by language. Please feel free to add to this list by adding a comment to this post with other useful AJAX resource sites. If you think the id...

Consider this list a primer. I've spent the last year looking at data visualizations and have compiled a list of resources that will give you a good view of what's going on in the field. Please use the comments section of this post to let the community know of any useful resources I've left out. Also, if there is enough interest in this post I'll be happy to open up a public wiki on data and content visualization. Please let me know.Places to see Visualizations We Feel FineSince August 2005, We Feel Fine has been harvesting human feelings from a large number of weblogs. Many community websites have adopted a new form of navigation which works more like an ecosystem and less like a static list. The definition of an ecosystem is "a system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their environment". Ecosystem navigation relies on community input including, recency, popularity, and activity. As an avid reader blogs I've always been struck by the similarity in the way their information is presented and navigated. In a standard blog paradigm the reader is presented with a list of blog posts sorted by date, and a list of comments, categories, tags. By scanning this list of information the reader is given a good idea of what the blog is focuse...

As always thanks to all of the developers and accessibility experts who made all of the information below available to us. Also, if you know of any other AJAX accessibility resources please add them to this post via my comments area. 3 Myths of Ajax and AccessibilityI've seen quite a few ideas and bits of policy writing about accessiblity that could probably do with some updating. These are the 3 most common.Accessibility of AJAX ApplicationsAJAX will not work in all web browsers. As its name suggests, AJAX requires JavaScript. This alone means that AJAX applications will not work in web browsers and devices that do not support JavaScript. For this reason it is not accessible to many typi...

Two features of note were the infinite scroll and the drag and drop functionality. I know what you're saying, "not another web app with slow unusable drag and drop". This drag and drop was very smooth and had some unique functionality. The ability to multiple select images by clicking your mouse and dragging your highlight (just like on your desktop) was one of my favorite features. You can also multiple select by control clicking as many photos as you like. From a design standpoint what happens to the photos during the drag process was rather cool. After you multiple select photos they shrink to tiny thumbnails and cluster around the mouse, then you can drag them into a well at the top o...

Twitterverse is a mashup and a visualization layer for Obvious' hot new product, Twitter, a "sophisticated, device-agnostic, social message routing system that nobody realizes they need until they try it," as Biz Stone so aptly described. We're self-proclaimed Twitter addicts. It's given us a glimpse into the lives of so many and let us share those moments in time, both mundane and magnificent, that otherwise would have gone unnoticed. Where blogging gave us a similar connection to the thoughts of individuals worldwide, Twitter is capturing these little moments in time - much like a photograph momentarily stops and captures time visually. This power to make the invisible, visible, is so...

Minimalist design patterns are not new to the web, in fact, It's how website design began. This was the first page that Tim Berners Lee ever made back at CERN. Currently archived by on his site, it is the essence of minimal design. This is as minimal as it gets on the web even today. Default text, no columns, or images. If you take a layout like this and add a minimal of CSS you may have a well designed and minimalist website. We'll call this website the internal elegance of web design. This is term I'm borrowing from mathematics where it is used to describe the beauty and efficiently of a formula, or in this case web design. The TestIn order to dig a little deeper into whether a website ...

The List ViewThe first user interfaces on the web all used the list view as the way to display content. This is the second web page ever authored by Tim Berners Lee in September of 1992. A very clean design with all of the information presented in a logical list format. The next phase of the list view came with the advent of using data tables as page structure. At some point nearly everyone except geeks and hardcore programmers started using this new style of interface design. Column structure is in many ways represents mixed or multiple list style. Basically, a series of lists divided by columns. In 1998 even google had column lists on it home page. Notice the blue boxes under the searc... |
